Objection deep dive: Spouse and authority
"I need to talk to my spouse first."
The spouse stall is the most common way a life insurance call dies politely. It sounds reasonable, it usually is reasonable, and arguing with it makes you the villain. The agents who keep these deals never fight the marriage. They work with it.
Why prospects say it
Sometimes it is real: couples decide money together. Just as often it is a soft exit, easier than saying no to your face. Your job is not to figure out which one it is. Your job is to respond in a way that works for both.
The move, step by step
- 1. Praise it, sincerely
Agree that deciding together is exactly right. Any hint of annoyance confirms their suspicion that you care about the sale more than the family.
- 2. Isolate it
Ask the question that separates the stall from the objection: if your spouse is on board, is there anything else that would hold you back? If yes, the spouse was cover for the real concern. Handle that instead.
- 3. Arm them with facts
Offer to get their exact rate first so the couple's conversation is about a real number, not a guess. A vague conversation dies; a specific one can be decided.
- 4. Book the three-way
Best of all: propose a specific time when both can be on the phone together. You would rather answer the spouse's questions yourself than have them relayed badly.
Say it like this
“Smart. Couples should decide together. Let me get your exact rate first so you two are looking at real numbers, not a guess. If she likes it, is there anything else that would hold you back?”
The mistakes that lose it
- Asking "can't you make this decision yourself?" in any wording. You just insulted their marriage.
- Accepting "I'll call you after we talk" with no number, no time, and no way back in.
- Pushing to close anyway. Even if it works today, it cancels in the free look period.
