Deep dive: Practice drills
"How do I practice objection handling?"
Reading rebuttals feels like practice and is not. Recognition is not recall, and recall under pressure is the actual job. Here is how to practice objection handling alone, with four drills and a pass bar for each one.
Why agents ask
Agents ask because the usual advice is another list of rebuttals, and lists do not transfer to a live call. Practice needs reps, resistance, and a definition of done. Every drill below has all three, and every one of them runs solo.
The move, step by step
- 1. Keep an objection journal
Write down every objection you actually heard this week, in the prospect's words. Script your best response after the fact, out loud, not just on paper. Pass bar: nothing in the journal surprises you twice.
- 2. Record and review
Say the rebuttal into your phone, listen back, and fix exactly one thing before the next take. Pass bar: a version you would be comfortable playing for another agent.
- 3. Run cold reads
Put ten objections on cards, shuffle, flip one, and answer out loud without pausing. The randomness is the point; real prospects do not go in script order. Pass bar: no card stalls you longer than a breath.
- 4. Roleplay against resistance
The other three drills lack a prospect who argues back. AI roleplay adds one that objects, escalates, and hangs up, plus grading you did not write yourself. Pass bar: hold the call through three pushbacks in a row.
The mistakes that lose it
- Rereading rebuttal lists and calling it practice. Recognition on the page is not recall on the phone.
- Practicing without a pass bar. A drill with no definition of done is a warmup.
- Drilling only the objections you already handle well. Comfort is the enemy of the rep.
On RingReady you drill the calls these questions come from, out loud against AI prospects who object, stall, and hang up like real people, and a coach grades every attempt.
