Objection deep dive: Think it over

"I need to think about it first."

No stall ends more life insurance closes than this one. It sounds thoughtful, so agents let it walk out the door. But almost nobody hangs up and thinks. There is a real objection underneath, and your job is to find it.

Why prospects say it

The prospect has an objection they have not named, and thinking it over is the polite container for it. Push a deadline and the real concern buries itself deeper. The right posture is curiosity, not pressure: give permission to think, then ask what the thinking is about.

The move, step by step

  1. 1. Agree and drop the pressure

Tell them thinking it over is fair and mean it. The moment the pressure disappears, the guard comes down, and a guarded prospect never tells you what is actually in the way.

  2. 2. Ask what needs thinking

One gentle question, zero sarcasm: just so I point you at the right thing, what part would you be thinking over? Most people answer honestly, and the answer is the real objection.

  3. 3. Read it by product

Term thinkers are usually price shopping, IUL thinkers do not trust the illustration yet, and final expense thinkers want to run it by family. Name the version in front of you and answer that, not the stall.

  4. 4. Close it or calendar it

If they name the concern, handle it now and ask for the business. If they genuinely need time, book the decision call with a day and a time before you hang up. A callback without both is a goodbye.

The mistakes that lose it

  • Taking the stall at face value. Thinking is almost never what happens after the call.
  • Offering a discount nobody asked for. You just told them the first price was padded.
  • Calling back with no new reason to talk. If nothing changed, the answer will not either.
Reading the move is half the rep.
