Deep dive: Call reluctance
"I keep putting off making the calls."
Every agent who quit did this first. Organizing leads, researching carriers, cleaning the CRM, anything but dialing. The fear is not a character flaw. It is a reps problem, and reps are the only thing that fixes it.
Why agents ask
The fear is rational. A new agent's first calls really are rough, and real leads really do cost money, so your brain is protecting your wallet by keeping you off the phone. Getting over the fear of cold calling starts with making the bad reps free.
The move, step by step
- 1. Climb the exposure ladder
Read the script out loud, then run it in practice calls, then dial live. Desensitization is boring and it works. Skipping rungs is how the fear wins.
- 2. Make rejection free
Your first hundred rejections should cost nothing. Bad reps on paid leads teach avoidance, because every fumble burns money. Bad reps in practice teach recovery, because you can run the same moment again ten seconds later.
- 3. Take the hangup rep
Get hung up on over and over until it stops spiking your heart rate. A simulated hangup hits the same nerves as a real one, and the nerves are what you are training.
- 4. Run a one week plan
Each day, a practice block with a pass bar you must clear, then a small live dial block. Scale the live share up daily. By day seven the phone is just a phone.
The mistakes that lose it
- Expecting practice to fix bad leads or a silent upline. It fixes you on the phone, nothing else.
- Calling research productive. Reading about dialing is avoidance dressed up as work.
- Waiting to feel ready. Confidence follows the reps, it never arrives ahead of them.
