Deep dive: Aged leads

"That was months ago. Things changed."

An aged lead is not a worse lead. It is a different call. The need that made them inquire months ago may have moved, and a fresh lead opener pretends nothing changed. This script leads with the time gap instead of hiding it.

Why agents ask

Months passed between the inquiry and your call, and their life kept moving. The mortgage got smaller, the health changed, or someone else sold them something. Assume the situation shifted and the call stays honest from the first line.

The move, step by step

  1. 1. Open with the gap

Name the time gap yourself before they can: a while back you asked for information on life insurance, and I am the one finally getting back to you. Owning the delay reads as honest, not suspicious.

  2. 2. Welcome the 'since then' policy

If they bought coverage after inquiring, do not flinch and never trash it. Ask when it starts paying and what it covers. Policies sold in a hurry leave gaps, and the agent who reviews politely is the one who stays.

  3. 3. Re-qualify the need

Months have passed, so the original reason may have changed. Ask what had them looking at coverage back then and whether it is handled now. If the need is gone, better to learn it in minute two.

  4. 4. Hold the quote

Quoting early is tempting on aged leads because price feels like the fastest way to prove you are useful. It is also the fastest exit ramp. No number until you know who the coverage protects.

The mistakes that lose it

  • Pretending the lead is fresh. The moment they check the date, you look dishonest.
  • Assuming the original need survived the wait. Requalify before you quote anything.
  • Reading the script flat while they interrupt. Aged leads punish anyone who cannot leave the page.
Reading the move is half the rep.
